I am a first generation American born to European immigrants. My mother is Danish, born to a farming family on the Island of Fyn, and my father is from a small town in northern Germany, Marne in Schleswig-Holstein. They met and married in Minnesota where I have lived all of my life. My dad became an American citizen by serving in our U.S. military, and my mom legally held a green card and waited until I was a teenager to start the process of becoming a U.S. citizen.
With misguided leadership and unfettered power, ICE is separating families in ways that are offensive to most Americans. We must acknowledge that we are a land of immigrants, and that we the people have come together and formed a more perfect union. These are the concepts that originate in the preamble to our United States Constitution and were most notably highlighted in Obama’s 2008 speech. Having navigated many difficult and conflicting situations over the course of history, it has been our Constitution and the values that it represents that has lead us safely out of turmoil. Originally crafted to end lawless violence in the Wild West, it is now called upon again to temper and guide us through to peaceful elections, minimally.
The full text of the Preamble to our Constitution of the United States of America reads:
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of American.”
Federal standards set a minimum for the states, as states are welcome to provide a higher standard, like an upside down wedding cake, the states may do better and for our state in so many ways we have – with room for improvement.
The preamble to our Constitution of the State of Minnesota reads:
“We the people of the State of Minnesota grateful to God for our civil and religious liberty and desiring to perpetuate its blessings and secure the same to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution.”
Consistent with my values, I am officially endorsed by AFSCME, MAPE, AFL-CIO, Outfront, Women Winning, Planned Parenthood, Minnesota Nurses Association, and I am supported by Minnesota NOW. Additional endorsements to be announced as approved.
Minnesota is the north star state, leading in many ways. Minnesota can and must do better! Let us be that invested and blessed change together.
